Japan: Through our own eyes
The earthquake and tsunami which hit Tohoku region in Japan on March 11, 2011 left 15,726 people dead, 4,593 people missing, and 268,708 buildings destroyed (as of August 23, National Police Agency). At this unprecedented disaster in Japan, Plan Japan started the emergency support for the first time within the country.

One of the emergency response programs in Tohoku region was the child media project. The purpose of the program is to bring children’s voices heard in the recovery process through photo and video. The project was conducted in some of the worst affected areas of tsunami, namely Onagawa, Ishinomaki, and Shichigahama in Miyagi prefecture. 56 students from 2 primary schools participated in the photo project and 9 students from lower secondary school participated in the video project.
