Week 6 （23th June 2006）

◎同僚、友人との卓球ゲーム
ENJOYING TABLE TENNIS WITH COLLEAGUES AND FRIENDS
日本滞在6週間の最後の土曜日、プラン・ジャパン事務局のスタッフの計らいで、ガーナの家族のためのお土産を買いに、街に出かけました。いくつかの日本の伝統的なおみやげ屋さんを見てまわり、ガーナの家族、友だちにお土産を買うことができました。　その後、みんなで渋谷にある室内ゲームセンターに行き、そこで私の趣味の1つである卓球を楽しみました。　日本滞在も残り少なくなり、予定もびっしりと埋まっており、日本で卓球をすることはないだろうと思っていたので、とても楽しいひと時を過ごすことができました。そして、ゲームの後はいつものように、ガーナ料理のレストランに行き、ガーナ料理とお酒を満喫しました。プラン・ジャパンの同僚、友人の皆さんのおかげで、日本のいい思い出ができました。

During the last Saturday of my six weeks stay in Japan, staff at Plan Japan arranged to accompany me to town to buy some souvenirs for my family in Ghana. After going through some typical Japanese traditional souvenirs’ shops at Omote-sando and selecting some gifts for loved ones and friends in Ghana, it was therefore arranged to meet some friends and other JNO staff with his family at Shibuya to go to a famous indoor game center in the area and play some table tennis (one of my hobbies), which I enjoyed so much. I was initially thinking it would not be possible to enjoy my favourite game in Japan since almost all weekends are fully booked but after that Saturday, I came to realise that it is not over until it is over. As usual, we went to Ghana Restaurant to enjoy some delicious Ghanaian food and drinks after the games. Thanks to my Plan Japan colleagues and friends who made this possible and will always remember the good old days in Japan.

◎カラオケは・・・
KARAOKE MUSIC GOES BEYOND LIFE
音楽はいのち、人生であると言われることがありますが、カラオケはそれ以上でした。プラン・ジャパンの同僚とともに職場の近くにあるカラオケに行き、洋楽邦楽、ガーナ音楽を歌った後、なぜカラオケがそれほどに楽しいのかわかりました。　これは村に心地よい音楽が流れていると、蛇がメロディに魅かれるように家の中に入ってくるのと同じです。私は、歌手のようには上手に歌えませんが、それでも、2時間のカラオケを楽しんだ夜は、とても気持ちよく眠ることができました。私たちは、音楽を聞くだけでなく歌うことで楽しむべきだと思いました。歌うことで、歌詞が持つ深い意味を味わうことができるからです。
日本での6週間の滞在は本当に楽しいものばかりでした。　私の滞在を支えてくれた皆さんに感謝しています。場所は遠くなっても、心はずっと日本の皆さんのそば近くにいたいと思います。

Music they say is life but karaoke music goes beyond that. It was after joining the JNO colleagues to one of the Karaoke Entertainment centres in Tokyo to sing Western, Japanese and Ghanaian songs that I clearly understood the reason why Karaoke music goes beyond life. This is why snakes at times move to the house to enjoy the sweet melody when good music is being played in a typical village.

I really had a good sleep after enjoying two hours of karaoke music even though I do not have a good voice like those in the music industry. I think everybody should try as much as possible not only to be a listener but a singer of songs because that is one way that you can reflect on the words of wisdom from our musicians.

I just want to remark that I have really enjoyed my six weeks stay in Japan and this was made possible with the support of the hardworking and caring JNO staff. I am much grateful and even though am leaving this week; I　am with you in the spirit and will still get in touch.

初めてのカラオケナイト！

Week ５ （14th June 2006）

◎日本の子どもたちとのサッカー
SOCCER MATCH BETWEEN JAPANESE CHILDREN AND AFRICAN DIPLOMATS

6月4日(日)、私は「せたがやウキウキクラブ」（特定非営利活動法人「NPO昭和チャイルド＆ファミリーセンター」による総合型地域スポーツクラブ）に招かれ、日本の子どもたちとサッカーを楽しみました。在日アフリカ系の子どもたちもいっしょに参加してもらって試合をしたいと考えていたのですが、残念ながらアフリカの子どもたちは参加できませんでした。在日ギニア大使とケニア大使館職員、そして私がアフリカの代表として、日本の子どもたちとともににサッカーとスナッグゴルフを楽しみました。この1ヶ月、日本を飛び回って、ガーナの子どもたちやプラン・ガーナの活動を伝える毎日でしたので、体を動かし、汗をかいたこの一日はよい気分転換になりました。アフリカの子どもたちが参加できなかったのは本当に残念ですが、招いてくださった「せたがやウキウキクラブ」の皆さんには、とても感謝しています。健全な心は健康な体のうちにこそ育ちます。子どもに限らず私たちは、もっと週末や休日に体を動かすように努力したいものです。

思わず本気でボールを追いかけました。

On June 4th, I had a chance to visit nearby children’s sport club organized by local NPO. They kindly invited us to have a football match between African and Japanese Children, but African children could not turn up. The Guinea Conakry Ambassador, a lady from Kenya working with the Kenya Embassy and myself were there to represent the African image, and played football and hockey with Japanese Children. This was real fun and good exercise after travelling all over Japan for about a month and having presentations and discussion with Sponsors and students on situation of Ghanaian children and Plan Ghana activities. The organisers of such event should be congratulated for the good work done. My only disappointment is that they could not get the African children. Everybody should try as much as possible and do some small exercise during the week-end/off days because sound mind lives in a sound body.

◎東京の新交通（舎人線）の建設現場を見学
 CONSTRUCTION OF NEW TRAIN SYSTEM IN TOKYO

日本滞在も5週目を迎えたある日、私はプラン・ジャパン事務局のボランティアスタッフに誘われて、東京の新交通（舎人線）の建設現場の見学にでかけました。その見学にあたり私は、「なぜ東京に今以上新しい電車が必要なのだろうか？」という疑問を持っていました。なぜならこの滞在中、東京やその近郊を見る限り、電車を始め陸上の輸送機関はすばらしく発達しており、これからはその修理・維持をしていけば十分ではないかと感じていたからです。その新交通システムの見学を通じて、現在の一般的な電車と比べ大きく改良されていること、すべての運行がコンピューターによる自動運行であること、また車輪はゴムタイヤを使用し、レールのない専用軌道を走るため、快適性が高い乗り物であることがわかりました。また、エンジニアの方のお話を聞いて、人々が新交通システムを必要としているということが納得できました。一方で、日本がどんどん開発を進める一面を目の当たりにして、途上国が先進国に追いつくにはよりいっそうの努力が必要になると改めて実感させられた日でもありました。

During the 5th week, I was invited by a volunteer staff in JNO to visit the construction site of the new train system that is being constructed in Tokyo. At that point, the question I was asking myself was; why the need for a new trains system in Tokyo? This is because after travelling through Tokyo and its environs, I observed that both train and road transport systems in Japan are very good and if any anything at all, there should just be repairs and maintenance.  During the visit to the site I observed that this system is an improvement on the current system where trains are using roads with vehicles and everything of the new system is automatic. After explanation by the engineer on site, I realised that there was the need for the modern train system. The point I want to put across is that if country like Japan are thinking of constructing modern system again, then the developing countries have to “fly” to catch up with the advanced world.

◎広島平和記念資料館への訪問
VISIT TO HIROSHIMA PEACE MEMORIAL MUSEUM

私は広島のプラン支援者の会を訪問した際、広島平和記念資料館を訪れる機会を得ました。その資料館で私は、子どもからも大人からも、原爆の恐ろしい体験について学ぶこととなりました。1945年8月6日、美しい広島の街に落とされた世界で始めての原爆の悲劇を目の当たりにして、戦争は許されないことだと感じました。　たった1つの爆弾が、広島の街の建物を破壊、そして、数十万人もの罪のない人々の命を一瞬にして奪うのです。　さらに、現在でもその恐ろしい原子爆弾を作り続けている国々があることはとても残念でなりません。何のために作り続けているのでしょうか。大量破壊兵器として作っているのでしょうか。現在の国際化社会の中で、ひとつの国で起こる事は直接的、間接的にほかの国々に影響を与えます。持続可能な社会をもたらすために、私たちはひとつになり平和の必要性を世界に伝えていななければならないと感じました。

広島で初めて、刺身に挑戦しました

I had another opportunity to visit Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum during the visit to the city for sponsor group meeting. After being informed, observed and read about the terrible experience by children, women and men when the world’s first atomic bomb exploded on August 6, 1945 over the beautiful city of Hiroshima, then there is no need for any human being think of and/or promote war. This single bomb instantaneously crushed and burned most of the city’s buildings, killing hundreds of thousands of innocent people, most of whom were women and children.
 It is rather unfortunate to learn that there are still some countries in world today manufacturing and testing atomic bombs. The question is for what reason and purpose? Manufacturing and keeping weapons of mass destruction?　I also believe that the world is now a global village and whatever happens to one country, directly or indirectly affect other countries. We should together with one voice preach peace and do things that will bring peace in the world. The world needs peace for sustainable development.

◎日光東照宮への訪問
VISIT TO NIKKO TOSHOGU SHRINE AND OTHER PLACES OF INTEREST

5月末のある休みの日、私はプラン・ジャパン職員とそのご主人に案内され日光へ観光にでかけました。東照宮をはじめ、周囲の美しい山々を見下ろせる明智平ロープウェイ、中禅寺湖や華厳の滝を訪れました。華厳の滝では、より近くでその迫力を感じることができるよう、エレベーターが運行しており、100メートル降りるのに所要時間は1分ほどでした。そこからトンネルを抜けて滝の近くの展望台に行くのですが、気温はぐんぐん下がって、10度以下になっていました。
自然の美しさ以外にも、100年以上の歴史を持つホテルでの昼食や、中禅寺湖畔で出会ったサルたちも印象に残っています。
楽しいひと時を過ごした後、私たちは東京に戻り、六本木にあるガーナ料理の店へ向かいました。30分以上探し回り、ようやくたどり着いた店でおいしいガーナ料理、飲み物、そして音楽を楽しみました。家についたころには10時を回っていました。

このような観光のチャンスを可能にしてくれた皆さんに感謝したいと思います。

華厳の滝。自然の美しさに感動しました

 During one of my off days in the 4th week, a staff of Plan Japan and her husband picked me at my apartment and sent me to Nikko for site seeing. I had another great opportunity to visit Nikko Toshogu Shrine, use Akechidaira Rope Way to observe beautiful mountains and Kegon Waterfall. To have closer look at the water fall, an elevator, which move down 100 m within a minute was used to the observatory. The natural temperature in the walk to the observatory was closer to 10 degree and at the observatory; one can then see the beauty of nature by having a closer look at the waterfall.
Apart from looking at these places of interest and also seeing some monkeys on the road, we also had good lunch at famous hotel, which was built over 100 years ago. After having very nice time at Nikko, and on our way back to Tokyo, we finally located a Ghanaian Restaurant in Roppongi, after searching for over 30 minutes. In the restaurant, we enjoyed good Ghanaian food, drinks and music, which climax the day and was finally sent back to my door step around 10 pm.

I once again want to end this piece with thanks to the staff and her husband for their time and other resources spent on the trip and wish them all the best in all their endeavours. To my other colleagues in Plan Japan, Sponsors/Donors, and Board Members, who had contributed in diverse ways to make my stay in Japan enjoyable, I wish you the same.

Week 3 （1st June 2006)

◎アフリカン・フェスタ　2006
　　AFRICAN FESTA, AFRICAN FOOD, AFRICAN CHILD

日本滞在も2週間が過ぎ、日本料理、中華料理をはじめ、バングラデシュ、インド、タイ、ヨーロッパなど、さまざまな国の料理に苦戦していましたが、やっと、5月20日に東京の日比谷公園で開催されたアフリカン・フェスタで、ガーナ料理、そしてそのほかのアフリカ料理を食べる機会に恵まれました。アフリカン・フェスタの企画はどれも素晴らしいと思います。このフェスティバルが年4回催されてくれればと思いました。なかでも私が驚いたのは、日本人を含め、アフリカ人ではない人たちがアフリカ料理を出す屋台の前で長い列を作って、食事を注文していたことです。アフリカ料理を求めていたのは、私だけではなかったのです。 
一方、アフリカンフェスタでは、プランと同様にたくさんのＮＧＯが、アフリカの子どもたちへの支援を呼びかけており、それらの活動はどれもすばらしいと思いました。しかしながら、フェスティバルの会場では、まったくアフリカの子どもたちを見ることができず、彼らの参加なしに、日本の人々の関心が得られるのだろうかという疑問が浮かびあがってきたのも事実です。今後、NGOやその他の団体のサポートを得て、アフリカ政府がもっとアフリカの子どもたちの参加の機会を増やし、プログラムが強化されることが、アフリカにいる子どもたちの豊かな未来につながっていくのではないかと思いました。

After struggling with Japanese, Chinese, Bangladesh, Indian, Thai and European food for two weeks, I finally laid hand on Ghanaian and other African food during the African Festa. Thanks to the organisers of the program and hoping it would be organised 4 times in a year. To my surprise, Japanese and other non-Africans in Japan were rather in a long queue in front of African Restaurants at the Festa, requesting for all sort of combinations, to the detriment of the Africans themselves. This was an indication that I was not the only person in die need of African food. Again, there were several NGOs at the Festa all claiming of championing the interest of African Child, which made it difficult to identity the good and the genuine ones like Plan Japan. Besides, I did not see any African child at the Festa and the question for reflection is; how do you champion somebody’s interest without his or her involvement? It is my hope that all governments in Africa, with the support of NGOs, bilateral and multilateral institutions will implement programs through the involvement of the children and that is the only way African child can achieve his or her fullest potential in life.

◎ジョージ、東京近郊の農家を訪問
　　CHALLENGE FACING FARMERS IN KIYOSE, JAPAN

今週、私のたっての希望で日本の農家訪問が実現しました。訪問したのは、東京都清瀬市の横山農園で、3世代で営んでいるとのことですから、考えてみればこの家族はその土地で200年以上にわたり、その肥沃な土壌を維持していることになります。それは私にとってたいへんな驚きでした。 
私が訪れたとき、その男性と両親そして、祖父母がその農園で働いていました。その農園では現在、家族と地元市場のための野菜、そして、ヨーロッパやアメリカから取り寄せた、さまざまな種類の花々を日本全国の消費者のために栽培しているそうです。 
訪問した農家やその地域の人たちにとっての懸念事項のひとつは、いかにして土地を守り、次の世代に残していくかということだそうです。農家をやめて宅地にしたり、工場建設のために土地を売ったりという傾向が目立っているとのことでした。この話を聞いて、ガーナの貧しい農村地域のことが思い出されました。ガーナでは、都市近郊に土地を持つ農家は、民間の開発業者に土地を奪われています。彼らの糧を生み出す農地が奪われ、貧しい農民は貧しくなっていく一方なのです。政府によって適切な政策がとられ、世界中の、特にアフリカの農家が保護されていくように祈らずにいられませんでした。

A young farmer was visited during the week and it was mentioned that he is the 3^rd generation working on that piece of land. That means the family has used the piece of land at Kiyose for more than 200 years but the land is still fertile. This is amazing. At the time of visit, the young farmer, the parents (mother and father) and the grandmother were all on the farm land doing one activity or the other. The family is currently producing vegetables for consumption and also to feed the local market and different type of flowers from Europe and America for the companies and individuals within Japan. The major challenge facing this young farmer and others in the community is how to keep the land for the next generation within the fast developing community. That is to say how to compete with the private investors who are already in the environment putting up residential accommodation and factories to the detriment of the young farmer and others. This situation is similar to what is happening to the poor farmers in Ghana, whose farms are closer to the capital city or the major towns, where private investor have already taken over their farm lands for private investment. The farmers in Ghana, who were already poor, are now poorer since their daily bread has been taken over from them. I hope the right measures will be put in place by the authorities to protect the interest of farmers in this area and other part of the world, especially Africa.
