◎東京タワーでの観光
TOKYO TOWER AND MAINTENANCE CULTURE
日本滞在も2週目に入りました。週末、私は昭和女子大学の学生の皆さんに案内してもらって、東京の観光地を訪れました。そのなかでも、東京タワーを訪れたときのことをご紹介します。高さ333m、重さ4000トン、自立型鉄塔としては世界一というこのタワーに、私は驚きの連続でした。東京タワーへ向かうと知ったとき、私はただ外からタワーを観察するだけだと思っていたので、実際にエレベーターで上がれると知ったときはワクワクしました。他の観光客に混じって、昭和女子大学の学生さんとともにチケットを買い、展望台にあがっていく過程は忘れられない体験でした。そして展望台から東京近郊一帯が一望できたときの感動は言葉で言い尽くすことができません。一方で、展望台からの美しい東京の姿は、先進国と開発途上国との違いを鮮明に映し出しているように感じました。
タワーを降りると、周囲には小さなお店が立ち並び、人々が恋人や友だちにお土産を買っている様子も印象に残りました。もう1つ私が感心したことは、東京タワーは1958年に建設されたにもかかわらず、まるで真新しい建築物のごとく今日まで美しく維持されている点です。こうした日本人の習慣は、世界中の、なかでもアフリカの人々に伝えるべき大切なものだと思いました。
こんな経験を可能にしてくれた人々すべてに感謝しています。「ありがとう（ございます）」という日本語で心からのお礼をお伝えしたいです。

During the 2nd week, I had the opportunity of visiting few places of interest in Tokyo with the support of beautiful women from Showa University at Setagaya and want to share the experiences at Tokyo Tower. It was amazing to read that the height of the tower is 333m and also the tallest self-supporting steel tower in the world, which weights about 4,000 tons. When we were going, my thoughts were that we were just going to stand outside and observe the tower, not knowing that the facility has been constructed in such a way that an elevator can send you to the main observatory to observe the whole Kanto Region surrounding Tokyo. It was a fantastic experience joining other tourists and the guides from Showa University in the elevator at the foot town of the tower after going through the process of acquiring ticket and lifted up into the main observatory. From the observatory one could then see the real beauty of Tokyo and also reflect on the distinction between the advanced world and the third world. The foot town of the tower is even a unique place for one to buy any souvenir for love ones or friend. It is also interested to note that this facility was constructed in 1958 but still looks very new due to the good maintenance culture of Japanese. This is a food for thought for all the good people in the world, especially Africans.
I just want to take this opportunity to thank the college students and all Japan National Office staff for supporting me to visit places of interest in Japan. As Japanese will say “ARIGATOO (GOZAIMAS)”.
◎日本で実践されていた「子どもとともに進める地域開発」
CCCD(Child Centred Community Development) IN PRACTICE
日本の観光地の感想から離れて、滞在2週目の、もうひとつの重要な活動を紹介します。私はガーナの状況とプランの活動を報告するためにいくつかの学校を訪問しました。そのなかの１つ、南流山中学校はガーナのチャイルドと交流しているスポンサーです。訪問した際には、学校内部と生徒総会の様子を見ることができました。その総会の運営には、先生たちのサポートはほとんど、もしくはまったくないということを聞いてたいへん驚きました。保健、美化、図書といった各委員会からの報告があったり、ガーナのチャイルドの生活を知るための時間が設けられました。また、議長も生徒が務め、生徒会が去年の活動に関する報告や今年度の課題や計画について報告をしました。質疑応答のやりとりを見ても、生徒たちの視点はするどいものばかりで理解度の高さに目を見張りました。彼らはスポンサーとしての寄附金をアルミ缶の回収から得る収益で賄っています。私は南流山中学校のこうした取り組みをみて、プランが世界各地で実践している「子どもとともに進める地域開発」そのものだと感じました。「子どもとともに進める地域開発」とは、子どもたちが主体になって進める活動で、ガーナの子どもたちも積極的に開発活動に参加しています。支援国である日本においても、子どもたちが貧困解決に参画している様子を目の当たりにし、感銘を受けました。私はこの経験を記録に残し、日本だけでなくプラン・ガーナでも共有したいと思っています。

Apart from visiting few places of interest, the second week was also devoted for Junior High and Elementary schools’ visit to make presentation on Plan International in general and Plan Ghana in particular. Minami-Nagareyama Junior High School visit coincided with their school board meeting. It is remarkable to note that the meeting was organised by the students themselves with little or no support from the teachers. These students were looking at issues concerning their health, environment, reading books and that of their sponsored child in Ghana. It was at the moment that I observed the real CCCD in practice. The meeting was chaired by a student and the executive members of the board gave their reports on activities implemented during the past year, challenges and the way forward. The various committee reports were also presented during the meeting. The floor was later opened for questions and answers session and it was at that time that the students exhibited a lot of maturity. These same students are also sponsoring a child in Ghana through the selling of recycle aluminium cans. I strongly think that this experience should be properly documented, shared and replicated both within Japan and outside world.
